The Hospital Birth Story of a First Baby – Catherine Brown Professional Birth Photographer
Stefenie & Chester are such a fun couple! They are seriously so adorable together and being in their presence is always so positive and up lifting.
I was contacted fairly late in their pregnancy to inquire about Birth Photography and lucky for us both I had one spot remaining for January!
After talking more about all things birth, at our consult, they also decided to hire me as their Doula. I was so excited to be hired to support them in both roles as they planned and prepared for the birth of their very first baby.
On the morning of Friday January 13th, as I was sipping my morning coffee, I got a text from Chester letting me know that they were at St Boniface hospital. They were being admitted as Stefenie was 6 cms! I was really not expecting to hear from them just yet! Stefenie was 39 weeks and although she did have some contractions earlier in the week they ending up stopping and she still carried on and went to work the next day. So of course this was a pretty big surprise!
I quickly got organized on my end and headed over to the hospital. I arrived to them happily labouring and Stefenie quietly working through her contractions in between conversations. We talked about all sorts of stuff and it was so nice to get to know them even more! Although nobody was superstitious we talked about how baby very likely would be born on Friday the 13th and Chester expressed his desires that if baby was a boy he really liked the name “Chester”. We would soon find out!
Nobody would have guessed that Stefenie was now 7 cms. Her nurse and I joked that she was somehow secretly labouring while nobody was watching.
Throughout the next few hours Stefenie laboured in all different positions. From bed to ball to standing to showering and even many lunges! Stefenie was game to try all the positions I suggested and Chester stayed right by her side supporting her.
The entire labour, birth and postpartum Chester was such a wonderful support and rock. He took great interest in the labour and birth process. Maybe he’s got some birth nerd in him like me? Either way I always like to answer questions and so many birthy conversations were had. He was always ready for suggestions on how he could support Stefenie best. They worked so wonderfully together. It’s always so heart filling to see couples work as such a team and I just know that being such a solid team in labour and birth sets you up to be a solid team for parenting!
Eventually after lots of labouring and a bit of rest it was time! Stefenie was 10 cms. It was also discovered that baby was indeed posterior.
Pushing took some extra work and many position changes as it does with posterior babies but again Stefenie just kept on working at it and was always ready to try the next suggestion. She was so incredibly strong and active in her labour and birth!
At 9:45 pm on Friday January 13, 2017 baby arrived with a full head of hair! As planned Dad got to take a peek and announce that they had a baby girl! There would be no baby Chester today but instead a perfect little girl that they would later name Natalya. Mom and baby were placed skin to skin right away and had some delayed cord clamping just as planned. The moment of meeting their baby that was so long awaited was finally here! Natalya was so alert and had a good look around at the outside world before settling in to nurse. They were now a family of 3!
I am so over the moon for Stefenie & Chester and their perfect little girl, Natalya. Congratulations again.
